Katherine’s fingers danced over the delicate pages of a first-edition Blake, her eyes gleaming with excitement. She’d never imagined she’d be handling such priceless works, let alone feeling confident in her assessments.

“Excellent work, Katherine,” Cordelia beamed, peering over her shoulder. “You’re picking this up remarkably quickly.”

Katherine smiled, carefully closing the book. “Thank you, Cordelia. It’s fascinating work.”

As she prepared to leave for lunch, Cordelia called out, “Oh, Katherine? Take the rest of the afternoon off. You’ve more than earned it.”

“Thank you!” Katherine’s mind already raced with plans. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”

Outside, she pulled out her phone and dialed Jessica’s number.

“Jess? Hey, it’s Kat. I was wondering if that offer for a book-appraisal lesson was still open?”

Jessica’s warm laugh came through the speaker. “Of course! Come on over whenever you’re ready.”

An hour later, Katherine pushed open the door to Mildred’s Mystic Tomes, the familiar scent of old books and incense enveloping her.

Jessica emerged from behind a towering bookshelf, her face lighting up. “Kat! Welcome back.” She gestured toward the back of the shop. “I’ve got everything set up for us. Oh, and I’ve made some of Gran’s special tea. Want some?”

“Absolutely, thank you.”

Katherine followed her to a cozy nook filled with stacks of books and two comfortable armchairs.

As they settled in with their steaming cups, Katherine pulled out her phone. “Just give me a sec. Gotta let Kirk know I’ll be here a while.”

She quickly typed out a message:

Having tea with Jess at the bookstore. Might be here a while. See you at rehearsal.
